Over the last few years I have watched “hybrid” aquaponic designs attempt to take a foot hold in commercial aquaponics. However, all of the application to date have been hobby operations. A hybrid, for want of a better description, is using multiple growing methods in one system. In this example a media filled bed and deep water culture aquaponics in a single loop.
Back when we built the first hybrid system at a school we installed a floating raft (DWC) and a gravel filled bed and published the design and the installation photos. Within a few months of completing it the “hybrid” was the next catch phrase of the day and the next best thing since sliced bread for commercial applications.
