Following up on our previous discussion about Aeration, Air Diffusers and Air Stones let’s take a closer look at biofiltration Aeration. Moving bed biofilters require substantial air. The air is providing mixing of the biomedia and oxygen for the bacteria for nitrification.
Biofilter filter design is complex at a large scale because of varying feed conversion and feed types. Biofilters performance is effected by the amount of Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN), Oxygen saturation, alkalinity and temperature to a lesser extent. Working out how much oxygen or aeration one needs to run them efficiently can be extremely complex. However, there is a rule of thumb that works well.
